Cow death sparks UP police station attack

Lucknow, Aug. 24: Cow vigilantes have ransacked a police station in Uttar Pradesh and set fire to a mini-truck seized from suspected cattle rustlers, alleging that police apathy led to the death of a rescued cow. Over two dozen people in Malhipur village in Saharanpur district, 600km from Lucknow, yesterday attacked Rampur-Maniharan police station. "The cow vigilantes, who used to inform the police whenever they found something suspicious, were lying low for the past few days. During the attack on the police station, the force baton-charged the violent crowd and registered cases against five villagers who owe allegiance to Hindu organisations. Senior superintendent of police Manoj Tiwari said: "We will not spare the cow smugglers or thieves.
