Fauci on Monday praised pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca’s announcement that its coronavirus vaccine candidate is up to 90 percent effective and urged Americans to get a vaccine when one is available. “I can tell you that when my turn comes up and the FDA says this is safe and effective, I myself will get vaccinated, and I will recommend that my family gets vaccinated,” Fauci said in an interview on Washington Post Live. “To have a 90 percent efficacy in one of the components … that’s good news,” he said. “One of the difficulties about taking that approach is that it then maybe sheds some doubt on that process that I’m extolling now as being a firm process,” Fauci said. Until a vaccine is widely available, he said, people must remain vigilant about following public-health guidelines such as maintaining social distance from others.
