Hong Kong’s fourth wave of the epidemic may have peaked, the infection numbers are expected to slowly fall down with no more large infection clusters, said Dean of the University of Hong Kong faculty of medicine, Gabriel Leung Cheuk-wai. Leung said in an interview yesterday that Hong Kong’s previous waves of the epidemic were all set off by imported cases, which reflected the presence of loopholes from the epidemic prevention measures at the borders. “With authorities’ latest move of setting up designated quarantine hotels along with designated transportations, it is likely there will be no more local infections induced by such imported cases,” stressed Leung. Former health secretary Ko Wing-man also said in the interview that people in Hong Kong are having anti-pandemic fatigue, especially after the past three waves of the epidemic. “People may have lowered their guards against the virus after a whole year fighting the epidemic, authorities should continue capping public gatherings and dining-in at eateries to two people,” he added.
