Council dismantles pedestrian bridge at Weld Quay after crane accident

GEORGE TOWN: The overhead pedestrian bridge near the Pengkalan Raja Tun Uda ferry terminal in Weld Quay is being dismantled on Wednesday (Feb 5) night. Pengkalan Kota assemblyman Daniel Gooi said the Penang Island City Council (MBPP) decided to tear down the bridge, which was built in the 1970s, after a piling crane crashed into it earlier in the afternoon. “The dismantling works are being carried out now and are scheduled to be completed by midnight. “The bridge is being dismantled so that traffic can resume as there are two major festivals, namely Thaipusam and Chap Goh Meh, happening this weekend, ” he said.
