The R value — indicating how many people each infected person will on average go on to infect — stands at between 0.9 and 1.1. When R is above one an outbreak is increasing in size. Separate government estimates showed that case numbers were somewhere between shrinking by 2 per cent and growing by 1 per cent each day. The true figure is likely to be in the middle of those ranges, experts say. While the R value is unchanged from last week, the growth rate has changed from between -3 per cent and +1 per cent.
