This month in the Times photographic archive: August 2020

The month of August saw temperatures soar as the UK enjoyed its longest stretch of temperatures exceeding 34C since records began in the 1960s. These particular images were part of a scanning project we completed on the 1948 London Olympics in advance of the 2012 games. In 1948 temperatures often exceeded 30C as crowds and athletes struggled with the heat, however during the Olympic events that year daily life continued as normal in and around London. Here we see two schoolboys on their summer holidays paying a visit to the Tower of London to refresh their history. The captions stated it was extremely warm walking through the tower and they decided to find a cool spot.
