Coronavirus in Scotland: Nicola Sturgeon forced to defend decision to ban construction

The ban on construction goes against guidelines issues south of the border by Public Health EnglandNicola Sturgeon has clashed with UK ministers over her decision to ban construction in Scotland against the advice of English scientists. The first minister said that “we can repair the economy but we cannot bring people back to life” as she defended the construction ban north of the border. Douglas Ross, the Scotland Office minister, said earlier that Ms Sturgeon still had questions to answer over her decision to suspend construction despite guidance by Public Health England that work could continue as long as builders kept a safe distance. The row comes as there were 1,993 cases of Covid-19 confirmed today, an increase of 430 from Monday. There are thought to be over 65,000 unconfirmed cases, however.
