The initial package he brought forward was a good start in that direction – cancelling business rates and providing immediate loans for businesses. During the Global Financial Crisis governments fulfilled their role as a lender of last resort to the banking system, and that proved decisive. This once in a century shock is not something that many ordinary businesses and working people could prepare for. A policy should be adopted immediately in which the Government will stand by the unmet operating costs of businesses, and through them, individual workers during the crisis providing that they continue to operate. We will not cure the coronavirus pandemic until an as yet undiscovered vaccine has been developed by scientists.
