Cork emergency homeless shelters can add to people’s vulnerabilitiesA Cork Simon research report focusing on the vulnerabilities, resilience and quality of life in a homeless population has concluded that emergency shelters are an “ineffective last resort” that can add to people’s vulnerabilities. The report was based on 69 one to one interviews conducted over an eighteen-month period with 24 men and 12 women staying in Cork Simon’s emergency shelter. “All of the participants in this research study were in the private rented sector immediately prior to becoming homeless. Joe Finnerty said the research emphasises the resilience of the study group despite multiple vulnerabilities and deep social exclusion. Speaking at the launch, Cork Simon’s Director, Dermot Kavanagh, said, “It’s clear that long-term stays in the emergency accommodation aren’t good for anyone.
