Ireland’s decision to vote against the Mercosur trade agreement has been welcomed by a Cork TD who said the proposed deal threatens Irish farmers and undermines climate action. It was confirmed on Thursday, January 8 that Ireland is to vote against the controversial Mercosur trade deal. Speaking in Shanghai, Taoiseach Micheál Martin confirmed Ireland will vote no to the deal. “It is right that Government has confirmed Ireland will vote against the Mercosur deal, but this decision has come far too late in the day. Ireland must continue to oppose the Mercosur deal in every level and push instead for trade agreements that protect farmers, uphold high standards and align with climate action,” he added.
