The decline in the number of Canadian television subscribers and the growth in households that are either cord cutters or have never been traditional TV subscribers is accelerating, according to a new report. Convergence Research Group Ltd. said in study released Wednesday that its estimates 2016 saw a decline of 220,000 traditional TV subscribers, up from a 2015 decline of 190,000. Convergence said that 2012 saw the start of the rise in the trend toward households that were cord cutters or had never had a traditional TV subscription. The trend toward not having a traditional TV subscriptions also means revenue is flowing in different directions, the report says. Convergence said it sees residential broadband access revenue exceeding TV access revenue in 2019, four years after the number of residential broadband subscriptions surpassed TV subscriptions.
