A convicted murderer and rapist has failed in his attempt to challenge his convictions in New Zealand’s highest court. Oketopa appealed his convictions to the Court of Appeal in 1996 but was unsuccessful. Last week, the Supreme Court declined to grant him more time to lodge another appeal, citing insufficient grounds and the long delay since the last one. Ross Setford Oketopa wanted to appeal to New Zealand’s highest court, the Supreme Court in Wellington. The Supreme Court found the strength of Oketopa’s arguments for a miscarriage were “not such as to provide a compelling reason for more time” to lodge another appeal.
