Contact Energy will begin construction shortly on its Tauhara geothermal station near Taupō. Power generator and retailer Contact Energy saw six-month profit jump 32 per cent and is raising $400 million towards building its Tauhara geothermal project. The company said on Monday that construction will begin “shortly” on its $580 million geothermal power station on the Tauhara field near Taupō. “We believe the Tauhara geothermal project is New Zealand’s best low-carbon renewable electricity opportunity. That would help the company cut debt and fund the Tauhara station along with work on another $800 million worth of projects, including the potential replacement and expansion of Contact’s Wairakei geothermal power station.
