The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) on Monday called on local government units (LGUs) to construct protected bike lanes and walk paths. In accordance with the joint administrative order signed by national government agencies, the DILG directed the LGUs to establish such safe bike lanes for alternative transport. Interior Secretary Eduardo Año said that the public should consider biking and walking as alternative modes of transportation amid the pandemic. He explained that despite health protocols, commuters face the threat of contracting the coronavirus disease when riding mass transport. “Which is why walking and biking must be encouraged for they present less contact among the populace leading to less opportunities for infection,” Año said in a statement.
