Tuesday will see the holding of a consultative gathering to discuss the future of the mobile money market in Ethiopia (Feb. 21). Ethiopia has lagged behind other nations in the area in terms of Africa’s mobile money revolution, as PYMNTS observed in August. Only in 2021 did Ethiopia receive Telebirr, a national mobile money service offered by state-owned telecom provider Ethio Telecom. Due to Ethiopia’s telecom market’s restrictions, which prevented private firms from constructing and running mobile networks until late 2022, the country only recently entered the mobile money scene. “We believe we can produce similar success in Ethiopia that we’ve seen in Kenya and throughout the region,” Ndegwa said after the licence for mobile money was granted.
