OTTAWA—Conservative MPs voted Tuesday to put Erin O’Toole on notice, granting themselves the right to hold a review of his leadership at any time. The vote was held during the first meeting of the Conservative caucus since the Sept 20 election, which saw the party lose seats and fail to make a breakthrough in vote-rich Ontario.. While MPs emerged from Tuesday’s meeting trying to portray a sense of unity, two sources told the Star the vote giving MPs the power to hold a leadership review had widespread support in caucus. In part, that is because O’Toole himself had suggested the power be given to MPs, a choice he had also advocated for in 2019 when Andrew Scheer’s future as the party’s leader was in question. Scheer survived when the vast majority of MPs in his caucus declined to give themselves the power to review his leadership, but later stepped down.
