The strong bipartisan majorities supporting the defense bill in both chambers represent a a significant rebuke of the president, as it contains several repudiations of his policies as commander in chief. On Jan. 1, the Senate voted to pass a $741 billion defense authorization bill, ultimately overriding President Trump’s veto on the legislation. But by early December, he gave up his protest — and on Friday, cheered the passage of the defense bill over Trump’s objections. Sanders attempted several times this week to push the Senate to vote on legislation that passed in the House to increase the stimulus checks, before taking up the defense bill override. “What is the problem with giving members of the United States Senate the opportunity to vote on the legislation?”
