Andrew w. lyngdohAmpati: The Congress became the single-largest party in Meghalaya after winning the Ampati bypoll, three months after the National People's Party (NPP) formed the government by allying with the BJP although the Congress had won the most number of seats. The Congress retained Ampati with Miani D. Shira, eldest daughter of former chief minister Mukul Sangma, defeating her nearest rival, Clement G. Momin of the NPP, by 3,191 votes. Asked by The Telegraph whether he planned to stake claim to form the government, Mukul said: "That relates to our political strategy. The Congress has now become the single-largest party in the Assembly with 21 legislators. The winning margin of Mukul in Ampati in the February polls was more than 8,000.
