Communications Authority warns of unauthorised usage of GSM boosters

The Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) has raised an alarm over people using and selling GSM repeaters (boosters) and mobile phone jammers in the country, illegally. "Members of the public with any information concerning any individuals or companies using GSM repeaters (boosters) and mobile phone jammers are encouraged to contact the Authority," said CA. The Authority warned that the use of the said equipment interferes with radio communications which is an offence under Section 45 of the Kenya Information and Communications Act 1998 as amended. In a public notice published in local dailies on Friday, CA Director General Francis Wangusi noted that the law prohibits the use of GSM repeaters and mobile phone jammers since they are likely to undermine urgent communications in the event of emergency or national disaster. As the regulatory for the ICT industry in Kenya with responsibilities in e-commerce, telecommunications, broadcasting and postal/courier services, CA is also responsible for managing the country's numbering and frequency spectrum resources as well as protecting and safeguarding the interests of consumers in the ICT services.
