Mehedi Hasan/Dhaka TribuneThe minister blamed loading difficulties for the delay in onion shipmentCommerce Minister Tipu Munshi said the first consignment of Egyptian onions, initially scheduled to arrive Tuesday, will now enter Bangladesh on Wednesday. “A total of 50,000 metric tons of onions are being imported by air,” he said, adding that the first consignment from Egypt is on its way to Dhaka by a Saudi Airlines cargo plane. The commerce minister said the imported onions will be sold at a fair price through the Trading Corporation of Bangladesh. Around 12,000 metric tons of onions are entering the country by sea, while the locally grown variety has started to hit the market, he said, hoping that onion prices will decline rapidly. Munshi ruled out the possibility of any increase in edible salt prices, saying a total of 6 lakh metric tons of salt are currently in stock.
