It’s a sci-fi/horror/psychodrama/comedy/thriller/revenge/romance film — and that jumble of a description not only works, it does so in spectacular fashion. Everything seems to be following a predictable rom-com or redeemable-loser path, until news breaks that a giant lizard-ish monster is rampaging through Seoul, South Korea. Whatever Gloria does, whether it’s falling down or simply scratching her head, the creature immediately apes thousands of kilometres away in Seoul. Seoul attack headlines speak of a “Giant Monster-Like Creature” (why not just call it a monster?) Colossal maintains a through line of psychic trauma that many of us carry in life but never adequately deal with.
