There are no teams from the three major conferences -- ACC, Big 12 and SEC -- playing this weekend, nor are there any teams currently listed in The Associated Press Top 25 playing. But there are teams who were just on the cusp of making the top 25 to start the season playing. SMU was one of the surprise teams last season. The Midshipmen were 11-2 last season and beat Kansas State in the Liberty Bowl. BYU was 7-6 last season and made a bowl game – only to lose to Hawaii in the Hawaii Bowl.
