EDMONTON — Take it from me: Edmonton is not a town whose architectural history you’d want to mimic. When the Fairmont hotel chain released concept drawings of a proposed addition to Ottawa’s Château Laurier Wednesday, hundreds of Edmontonians gasped simultaneously in recognition. The Mac is Edmonton’s grand railway hotel. The Mac plays broadly the same role in Alberta’s public and business life that the Laurier does in the wider drama of the federation. The old, obtuse annex has been replaced by a little park with hedges and a statue of Robbie Burns.
