Climate activists disrupt rail services

Climate activists who locked themselves to tracks at the Dunedin Railway Station, blocking a train transporting coal yesterday, were targeting the wrong company, a KiwiRail worker says. The service was taking coal from Bathurst Resources’ Takitimu mine, in Southland, to Fonterra’s Clandeboye milk factory in South Canterbury. KiwiRail Dunedin operations manager Jamie McFarland speaks with police while Extinction Rebellion activists block a train transporting coal at the Dunedin Railway Station yesterday morning. KiwiRail Dunedin operations manager Jamie McFarland said the protest caused a "massive" disruption to its service, both locally and to the wider South Island network. KiwiRail is carrying climate-destroying coal to make a profit for the very Government that has declared a climate emergency."
