Auckland couple Ainsley O'Connell and Barry Copeland made about 20 models of their rural holiday cabin before they found the perfect solution. They are both architects, and they'd serendipitously found a section for their bolt-hole on the outskirts of Taihape, in the central North Island. Barry and Ainsley say they were struck by the beauty of the mountains, gorges and rivers, and the spirit of Taihape. Their choice of a sturdy cross-laminated timber panelling product meant the cabin could be prefabricated by Nelson panel manufacturers, XLam.
