Claude Cowork AI rattles software world after $830bn rout

Built into the Claude desktop application, Claude Cowork is designed to accept a job brief, break it into steps and then carry out the work using approved folders and tools. Anthropic says Claude Cowork runs locally inside an isolated virtual machine and stores its conversation history on the user’s device. Claude Cowork remains in what the company calls a “research preview”, with agent safety still under development. Claude Cowork is marketed as a system that can “think, see and act”, interpreting screens, interacting with interfaces and carrying out multi‑step workflows. In recent weeks, more than US$830 billion have reportedly been wiped from the market value of global software companies, as traders reassess what happens when AI can use software on a user’s behalf.
