Other sources of planning data are coming from outside municipalities. Such evidence helped city officials make decisions about extending park-focused programs and services into the cold-weather months. The push to mobilize new sources of “smart” urban data often comes from private firms that stand to benefit. The study described the practice as a “misuse” that could lead city officials to “erroneously” conclude that an area was experiencing some kind of decline. The series, by Toronto journalist and editor John Lorinc, will examine data and privacy, mobility applications, predictive policing, sustainable smart cities, data and planning and smart city megaprojects.
