Citizenship question: Petition on Rahul in Supreme Court

Rahul Gandhi during an election rally for Lok Sabha polls in Simdega district of Jharkhand, on May 2, 2019. (PTI)The Supreme Court on Thursday refrained from directing early listing of a petition filed by two “public spirited” persons, Jai Bhagwan Goyal and Chander Prakash Tyagi, asking that Rahul Gandhi be debarred from contesting elections and be stripped of his Indian citizenship allegedly because he was a British national. A bench headed by Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi said the matter would come up for hearing in the normal course. Besides the union government, the petitioners had made the Election Commission and Rahul respondents in the case. The Supreme Court had earlier on November 30, 2015, dismissed a PIL seeking a CBI probe into Rahul’s British citizenship.
