Church history to come crashing to the groundErin Tasker/Stuff The old section of the Ashburton Baptist Church is about to come down. The only remaining original section of the Ashburton Baptist Church is set to be reduced to rubble. Ashburton Baptist Church board member and property manager Merv Johns said it was sad to lose the last original piece of the church, which had stood there since 1926. "Unfortunately we have lost that at the moment (the op shop) but we are going to enquire about maybe setting up some containers or something there for the op shop," Johns said. The op shop wasn't a big money earner, but it was valuable for the church.
