Church Plants Seeds for New Community Garden

Village of Bonita resident Kathi Schue sees endless possibilities in the empty lot across the street from Fruitland Park City Hall. By the spring of next year, the grassy lot at the northeast corner of Berckman Street and College Avenue is set to be transformed into a community garden covered with rows of raised garden boxes. The project is a partnership made possible by connections across the community that have come together over recent months. The city’s mayor and his wife, Chris and Meredith Cheshire, purchased the land and donated it to Community United Methodist Church, who will manage the garden. Local businesses have chipped in to donate supplies — from sprinklers to soil — to help the garden take root, and volunteers from the church, Fruitland Park Elementary School and The Villages are signing up to help tend it.
