Chrysler has officially left Australia, dropping out three years after the brand left New Zealand. The sole remaining right-hand drive market for Chrysler is no more, as FCA Australia, a subsidiary of Stellantis, confirmed the departure of the Chrysler brand from Australia. SUPPLIED The 300C SRT was the last vehicle to be offered by Chrysler in both Australia and New Zealand. In 1971 Mitsubishi acquired a 15 per cent stake in Chrysler Australia, upping its stake eight years later and finally buying the Australian arm entirely in 1980 as a result of the US Chrysler Corporation being in bailout negotiations with the US government. Chrysler re-emerged into Australia in 1994 as a factory-owned operation (with some truly awful cars), and in 2012 took over the distribution of Alfa Romeo and Fiat there as well, later being renamed FCA Australia.
