OPINION: This week is World Antimicrobial Awareness Week, a World Health Organisation-backed campaign that happens each year between Nov 18-24. If you think you are allergic to penicillin, there is a very high chance you aren’t. Around one in 10 of us think we’re allergic to penicillin because we’ve had some sort of reaction to it in the past. But data shows that when most of us are retested we are no longer allergic and can safely take penicillin and related antibiotics. So, if you think you are allergic to penicillin, talk to your doctor or pharmacist to see if you can have your allergy status reviewed.
