Chris Selley: For federal leaders, there's no escaping inevitabilities of climate change


It may well be that Canadian taxpayers are happier to pay more to fight climate change just so long as the costs are hidden from them. But he’ll have to face a significant chunk of his base that simply objects to spending anything on climate change, because they don’t think it’s something mankind can fix. And even if mankind can fix it, you often hear it said that Canada can’t do much of anything to mitigate global climate change, since we only account for roughly 1.6 per cent of global emissions. Rather it highlights the need for aggressive planning on just how Canada is going to cope with its future climate. There is no argument to be made against reducing emissions — not if you believe the scientific consensus on climate change, as every mainstream Canadian politician claims to.
