Chris Robshaw soaked up the blows like no other rugby player you can think of. It was only when listening to his interview on the podcast My Sporting Mind that it became properly clear how badly they had hurt. He wouldn’t be alone in that; you may well joke that there is a whole gender who struggle with that. He also plays a sport in which, traditionally at least, it is not encouraged to allow your weaknesses to be exposed. At the time of his England captaincy, in particular when he led his country into the worst World Cup campaign ever by a host nation, he didn’t find it easy to articulate himself.
