Panto season has started early in the UK with a political dogfight in Downing Street. The starkest finding is that there is incredible variation in management quality within industries and between countries. That point about replacing low quality managers with top performers is fascinating. It’s a game of probabilities: the chances of success must be maximised by at least trying to get the best people in the right positions. Boris Johnson and Donald Trump fill key management positions solely on the basis of loyalty rather than competence.
