MELAKA: Some 250 residents living in Kampung Tambak Paya were ordered to evacuate their homes after authorities confirmed a chlorine gas leak incident here. The 5.30pm incident saw 24 victims, including two children and three firemen, rushed to the Melaka Hospital for treatment after suffering from breathing difficulties. It is learnt that the source of the leak came from several barrels left near a vacant home in the neighbourhood by unknown parties. The Fire and Rescue Department received a distress call at 5.51pm and arrived at the scene at 6.01pm. Based on initial information, the firemen, who were assisted by a Hazmat team from Alor Gajah, confirmed that the barrels contained chlorine, which can cause irritation to the eyes and throat and thus, immediately issued an evacuation order.
