Chinese steel tariff could increase construction costs, importer says

Chinese steel tariff could increase construction costs, importer saysDEAN KOZANIC / FAIRFAX NZ A worker paints steel on a Christchurch construction project. Steel importer KS Holdings' operations manager Garett Webb said local steel producers had raised concerns about Chinese steel dumping because they were trying to protect their home turf. Steel importers have dismissed claims that China is dumping steel on to the New Zealand market, despite steel prices hitting a 16-year low. Metalcraft Roofing branch manager Steve Biddulph said a tariff was unlikely to increase the cost of roofing because Chinese steel was not widely used. This had resulted in a 16-year low in New Zealand steel prices, which were largely indexed off global prices.
