Chinese 'spies' at UK universities where academics are suspected of passing technology face arrests

A high-level probe into Chinese ‘spies’ working in British universities could lead to arrests within weeks, The Mail on Sunday has been told. Earlier this year, Manchester University cancelled an agreement with a Chinese military technology company after it was warned it had supplied apps used by Beijing’s security forces in the mass surveillance of Uighurs. Meanwhile, Queen Mary University of London has established a ‘collaborative partnership’ with China’s Northwestern Polytechnical University, which specialises in military technology. It claimed breakthroughs by British universities risked boosting China’s drive for military supremacy through the development of hypersonic missiles, radar jamming systems, robotics, spacecraft and stealth vehicles. The Foreign Office has previously said it would be tightening vetting rules for advanced overseas students of technology.
