Chinese Nobel Peace laureate Liu Xiaobo has died, the government of the northeastern Chinese city of Shenyang, where he was being treated for late-stage liver cancer, said on Thursday. ‘China bears responsibility’The Chinese government bears a heavy responsibility for the death of Nobel Peace Prize laureate Liu Xiaobo, said the leader of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, which awards the prize. “We find it deeply disturbing that Liu Xiaobo was not transferred to a facility where he could receive adequate medical treatment before he became terminally ill,” said Berit Reiss-Andersen. “The Chinese Government bears a heavy responsibility for his premature death,” she told in an emailed statement. ‘Deep sorrow’Liu Xiaobo was and will remain an inspiration, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra’ad al Hussein said, expressing his “deep sorrow” at Liu’s death.
