Canada’s chief statistician, Wayne R. Smith, and the federal government butted heads over conflicting principles. All departments turned over technology services, budget and staff to Shared Services to run — with no exceptions. “The only practical and efficient way to do that is through a common solution, which is Shared Services Canada. Statistics Canada is one of 43 federal departments and agencies that were forced to surrender information technology staff and related budgets to Shared Services Canada when created in 2011. These facilities offer plenty of new capacity, but Shared Services data centre sources say they are not yet fully operational.
