But Chelsea are also in the market for a left-footed centre-back to replace Antonio Rudiger, who has joined Real Madrid on a free transfer. Chelsea did have the opportunity to exercise their £40 million buyback clause for Ake in 2020 but opted against it, which paved the way for the defender’s move to Manchester City. ‘Last season was very unhappy due to injuries, I don’t really count that year,’ Ake told NOS.
