One charity preparing to provide humanitarian relief for Haitians after a 7.2-magnitude earthquake struck Haiti on Saturday said COVID-19 will add challenges when it comes to providing shelter for victims left homeless. ShelterBox has emergency shelters stored in Panama ready to be sent to Haiti. Not only is Haiti still not fully recovered from the 2010 earthquake, Christensen says it’s still dealing with the political turmoil after the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse in July and a recent spike in COVID-19 cases. Normally, people displaced by natural disasters would stay in communal spaces like schools or community centres while waiting for emergency shelters to arrive. Foreign Affairs Minister Marc Garneau tweeted that Canada is ready to provide consular assistance to Canadians in Haiti.
