It is the most common cancer in women under 35 killing about 850 women a year. Cancer Research UK highlighted the increase from 12 cases per 100,000 people in 2004-6, up to 18.5 cases during 2015-17. "Cervical cancer is one of the few cancers that can be prevented through screening. The former Big Brother star announced diagnosis of cervical cancer in 2008. Prof Peter Johnson, NHS England cancer director, said: “It has the potential to become a thing of the past.”
