Peering up into its branches I could see the still-green buds of its flowers, the sight and perfume of which for me signal the beginning of Devipaksh, and the advent of Goddess Durga. By the end of the week, the days were cooler and the air no longer redolent of moisture-laden monsoon currents. Even back in the mists of time, this great truth had been realised by ancient Indian thinkers and seers. For She is not only Mahishasuramardini and Durga but is the superwoman from our ancient traditions, the role model who needs no touch-ups. So as the scent of the Shiuli flowers herald her arrival this week, let’s celebrate what she truly epitomises: woman power.
