Filipina fencing sensation Samantha Catantan didn’t take long to impress in the United States-National Collegiate Athletic Association (US-NCAA) Division 1 women’s foil. Catantan of the Pennsylvania State University placed third in the national championships and earned All-American honors. Catantan shared the third place honors with Amita Berthier of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, while Stefanie Deschner also of Notre Dame seized the championship. Eight other Penn State fencers bagged All-American honors, namely Ryan Griffiths (men’s epee), Jonathan Piskovatskov (men’s epee), Kelli Wozniak (women’s saber), Clement Perrier (men’s saber), Zara Moss (women’s saber), Sebastiano Bicego (men’s foil), Arwen Borowiak (men’s foil) and Kateryna Chorniy (women’s epee). Overall, Catantan and the Nittany Lions placed second in the national championships with 182 points behind the now 11-time champs Fighting Irish with 201 points.
