Witnesses said the two trains, running on the old Nairobi-Mombasa railway line, were approaching the Mtito Andei station when one rammed into the other. Both trains were both heading towards Mombasa when the accident occurred. "I was drawn to the accident scene by a loud bang and a subsequent thick cloud of dust," said Ms Winfred Mwethya, a witness.
