All a Southland truck driver could do was watch in disbelief as a car backed off the road and down a bank near the Clutha River earlier today. Gore truck driver Blair Powell was stopped at the lights on the Beaumont bridge when he saw a car reversing off the bridge and eventually falling down a bank. Once off the bridge the driver failed to see the edge of the bank and reversed straight over it. A police spokeswoman said the two occupants were uninjured and organised a tow truck to retrieve the car from the bank. "That's the first time I've seen that happen there, but as a truck driver we sure see things like this often."
