Canterbury quarry operators petition for priority over new housing


Four quarry operators have recently applied to break new ground on the outskirts of Christchurch (file pic.) Operators in Canterbury’s quarry-heavy Selwyn district are finding themselves competing for land with one of their biggest customers – new housing. It comes after quarrying was reclassified as a primary production activity, now standing alongside farming, in the Ministry for the Environment’s 2019 national planning standards. In its submission, Fulton Hogan opposed several policies, concerned the clauses do not properly recognise that quarrying can only happen in certain places. On setback distances, Fulton Hogan reiterated they need to work both ways.
