The fight by a Canadian family to remain in Scotland and keep running a rural Highland community’s only general store has ended in bitter defeat. The family originally moved to Scotland in 2008 for Jason to complete his studies. Smitten with the land and the people, the Zielsdorfs wanted to stay and were issued an entrepreneurial visa. Where the fictional McKechnies village store was, the Zielsdorfs started Laggan Stores Coffee Bothy & Wayfarer’s Rest — a combination café, shop and bed and breakfast. “As a family of seven, we’ll need to provide our own accommodations,” he said.
