After the United States reported its first case of polio in more than a decade last month, the Public Health Agency of Canada says it now plans to test this country’s wastewater for the virus. “PHAC has been communicating with national and international partners who are experts in this field to finalize a wastewater testing strategy,” the agency said in an email to the Star. It noted that testing wastewater for poliovirus is a “developing science” and that wastewater can be affected by things such as flooding. The agency’s statements on examining wastewater for polio come as several Western nations have recently reported incidents of polio. “There is always a risk that polio could return since it is still occurring in other countries,” it said.
